ARTINC

Elinor Cheung

I’ve always loved art and have been drawing or painting since childhood. Being Chinese-American, I was brought up to ensure I’d finish college, find steady employment, and be self-sufficient. Now that I’m retired, I have time to devote to creating art and for reflection, documentation, and expression. These eight works were inspired by trips to Las Vegas for getaways and celebrations. The works focus on the architectural structures along the Strip which were deliberately designed to dazzle and attract attention.

Fast forward to current day life.  We have been held captive by the raging COVID-19 pandemic and its far-reaching effects on the entertainment and travel industry. The paintings now take on an entirely new meaning. They are reminiscent of the earlier years of family fun, business conventions, and parties. Now, the narrative has changed. Partying and indulgences are on hold. The contrast between then and now is vivid and unsettling.
