APR. 29 DEMO IN THE ADOBE. 2 PM: QUILTS BY KHRISTEL JOHNSON

Good News! April’s demo at 2:00 p.m.is “in person” in the Adobe. Khristel Johnson, right, says that each quilt is designed with African fabrics, beads and textures to create a 3-D effect.

Hand applique, embroidery, creative imagery, and the inclusion of artifacts emphasize her AfricanAmerican story.

After being faced with a racially motivated challenge, she began ”to seek comfort from the stories and history of my African Ancestors,” and including them in her quilts.”

She says that she is not part of the quilting community and “new to the art.”“I am an educator first and felt a need to share a more comprehensive story about the African American Experience. She now has over 50 quilted tapestries and counting.

ART CAN REWIRE YOUR BRAIN

A new book touts the power of art and aesthetics as a “secret sauce” to literally rewire your brain.

The book is “YOUR BRAIN ON ART How the Arts Transform us,” by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross.

Even taking minimal time for oneself to regularly create or view art is psychologically calming and contributes to longevity and mental health.

GOING TO AMSTERDAM THIS YEAR?

You might want to visit the RIjksmuseum.

A retrospective of Vermeer paintings—28 of his 37 surviving works.—“a genuinely once in a lifetime event is on view.”

An impressive article on line, on BBC “Culture,” speaks of the hidden symbols that Vermeer imbedded in his works.

“Within the artist’s beautifully constructed visual reality is another dimension: an invisible reality of ideas spoken in the language of symbols.

BANKSY PAINTS UKRAINE WALLS

Banksy is an anonymous British artist, who came to fame with his street art, left. He stenciled unsigned images with social commentary, on walls worldwide on streets, and bridges, all illegal in the UK.

His paintings have often been sold, including the wall they were painted on. Now Banksy has painted on walls amid Ukraine’s wartime rubble, seven works in all.
One image—a kind of David and Goliath shows a boy slamming a giant to the ground (above) . It has been transformed into a Ukraine commemorative postage stamp.
And thieves have even tried stealing the images on bombed buildings, these “masterpieces” in Ukraine among all the wartime damage.
