February Perpetuating winter Insidious cold, rain rampant, maybe, Not a pleasant month, But for the bright spot Valentine’s Day Hearts and chocolate, Roses and romance, A surge of warmth To fight off the cold!

DO YOU KNOW A.R.T., INC. “WORKER BEES”?

The Adobe Gallery exhibits don’t just magically appear on the gallery walls, ready for public viewing. No, there are a number of members behind the scenes making the shows happen.
First, there’s Winnie Thompson, who sends out publicity to the Castro Valley Forum and other publications, letting the art lovers of the area know that A.R.T., Inc. is here.
Then there’s the Intake Crew, headed by Pat Doyne, who are working with cold air blowing in through the open door, to receive your work. They are Pat, Mary Cooper and Molly Dolly.
Next are the “Hangers,” who arrange the exhibit on the gallery walls—Gerry Thompson, Richard Geiger and Ann Malone-Mason. Three Cheers for them all !

KAY ATHOS, A.R.T., INC., FOUNDING MEMBER, PASSED AWAY, DEC. 31

“A.R.T., Inc.” was the name chosen at one of the early social meetings of a group of artists who gravitated to the Adobe Redwood Studio to meet and share art
Kay Athos of Castro Valley, was one of those A.RT.,Inc. “pioneers,” along with Marge Atkins, Vera Bates, Maggie Boyd, Carol Brown, Ken MacKenzie, Virginia MacKenzie, Shirley Martin, and Ronald Pratt. Kay was the first “Chairman” of A.R.T., Inc.
As you may know, Diane Kothe, H.A.R.D. Art Supervisor at the time, was instrumental in helping the little group grow into the A.R.T., Inc. of today by opening the Adobe Gallery to local artists and art shows in 1978.

A.R.T., INC. MEMBERS PROVIDE A TOUGH JOB FOR JUDGE

It must have been difficult for the show judge, Mary Harden, to choose the various award winners in the current Adobe exhibit, “New Directions.” There seemed to be so many interesting and diverse pieces, some of the work shown here:

   Seongmi Seol, “My Little World.”

 Pam Holloway, “Buoyant Boutique”

  Mary Hynes, “Castro Street”

  Julia Oversloot, “Cactus Orchid”

Anna Fisher, “This is a True Story.”

  Nan Soldahl, “Carson City Cowpoke,”

  Richard Geiger, “Kinda Jazzy”

  Madeline Shelby, “The Snake.”

  Charlotte Severin, “Persimmon and Pomegranate”

Picasso, a Thief?

In 1911, the Mona Lisa vanished from the Louvre. Pablo Picasso and Pieret Apollinaire were accused of stealing it, because they had taken small pieces of art the from the Louvre at some point.
When accused, they thought of throwing the pieces in the Seine, but couldn’t. The case ended up in court, but eventually, both Picasso and Apollinaire were acquitted with a warning. A former handyman in the Louvre actually stole the painting, and it was later returned.
